On Thursday 27 April at 6.30 pm, Tea Hacic will present, in dialogue with FUL Magazine journalist Viola Valéry, her latest book Una sigaretta accesa al contrario published by Fandango Libri.
At the dawn of the new millennium on the punk scene in North Carolina, penultimate province of the American empire, teenager Kat is an outsider dying to be accepted, to be cool, only for every attempt (or almost every attempt) she makes to do so to come up against her own inadequacies, against a reality almost too simple for a character as complex as hers.
The daughter of Croatian immigrants, she tries to model her identity on her group of friends, the boys who attend Dexter’s Workshop, a squatted house where no rules apply, and to fit in with the boys she has a crush on, always older, always messed up and with a life that seems much more interesting than her own. Between a concert and a piano lesson, with the fixed thought of losing her virginity as soon as possible, the days flow all the same, at least until Trippy Dope’s concert at Cat’s Cradle, after which she unexpectedly becomes a celebrity for all her peers.
But fame may not be the solution to all his problems… Una sigaretta accesa al contrario tells in a brutal and sometimes violent way the price to pay to be what you want and the irresistible centripetal force that the discovery of one’s desires brings. Brilliant prose, a unique voice, an exhilarating journey into oneself.
