As part of the 13th edition of Lo schermo dell’arte – Cinema and Contemporary Art Festival and of the Resisting the Trouble – Moving Images in Times of Crisis exhibition, the talk Commissioning Artists’ Moving Images will be live streamed from Manifattura Tabacchi Facebook page on Friday 13 November at 15:00.
Whether inspired by a specific theme or linked to a rigorous curatorial framework, commissioning is a fundamental process to support and develop the artists’ vision and their careers. In this round table we will discuss different strategies that were recently employed by three international institutions to successfully produce ground-breaking artists’ moving image works.

Fondazione In Between Art Film
Fondazione In Between Art Film supports the work of artists and institutions that explore the field of the moving image through exhibitions, new productions, and international partnerships.
The Foundation carries on the work of the production company In Between Art Film, founded in 2012, which forged partnerships with major projects and institutions such as the 55th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, MAXXI in Rome, Tate Modern in London, Documenta 14, Manifesta 12, miart in Milan, Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva, Lo schermo dell’arte in Florence, Dhaka Art Summit, and Loop Barcelona.
Han Nefkens Foundation
The Han Nefkens Foundation is a private non-profit organization that was founded in Barcelona in 2009 by Dutch writer and patron, Han Nefkens. It aims to promote art and the artistic process, and in turn, connect people through art and collaborating with renowned international art institutions. The Foundation’s founding values have defined it from the beginning as an innovative and forward-thinking model: a production hub that oversees and promotes contemporary creation from the very first moments until the final presentation. Positioned as a platform for video artists to advance in their careers, its main activity – always at the international level – is to commission works through its awards and grants.
KW Production Series (KWPS)
The KW Production Series (KWPS) is a new commissioning project, organized in collaboration with the Julia Stoschek Collection and OUTSET Germany_Switzerland, with commissions collected by Museum Abteiberg, Mönchengladbach.
KWPS is dedicated to artists’ moving image works and concentrates on two new productions per year. The project takes inspiration from KW’s founding principles as a place for production, critical exchange, and thoughtful collaboration. Within this ongoing series, KW seeks to identify and serve artists who are at a pivotal moment in their work and career.
Within KWPS, the curator Mason Leaver-Yap has produced moving image work by Andrea Büttner, Jamie Crewe, Beatrice Gibson, and Rachel O’Reilly, and is finalising two forthcoming works by Lin+Lam and Onyeka Igwe that will premiere in December 2020. KWPS has also served as as hub from which to produce publications, podcasts, events and talks in relation to the commissioned artists.
