Chunk / Marcello Spada

TOAST Project Space, TOAST Project Space presents CHUNK, an exhibition by Marcello Spada, curated by Gabriele Tosi, on Wednesday 24 June at 19:00.

The protagonist of this exhibition is a single object (Chunk), whose explicit but concealed nature reveals an inevitable tension.
In its anticipation, Chunk is an insoluble presence.

It is such a generic idea of object and space that it cannot be anything other than a sculpture. Specifically, a sculpture that, under the guise of kitsch and minimalism, pursues the pleasant artifice of caricature, bringing the medium back to a rudimentary state.
The object, produced by Toast Project Space in collaboration with Lottozero textile laboratories, is able to occupy the space in many different ways, triggering material reflections, whilst at the same time setting up simple but crude and inconvenient spatial situations.

Marcello Spada
Marcello Spada (Bologna, 1984) is a visual artist active between Italy and Germany. He studied Visual Arts at IUAV University Venice, at the HfBK Städelschule Frankfurt and the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam. He produces deceptive and tongue-in-cheek objects often related to the legacies of some of the post-war artists, investigating a life of artist’s intentions. He exhibited his work in public and private venues including La Quadriennale Rome, HangarBicocca Milan, Centro Luigi Pecci Prato, Viafarini Milan, LOCALEDUE Bologna, BASE Florence, TRIPLA Bologna, Fondazione Bevilacqua La Masa Venice, MMK Frankfurt, Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin, Weltkulturen Museum Frankfurt, Inox Copenhagen, X-Bank Amsterdam. In 2019 he was awarded a travel grant by the Hessische Kulturstiftung.

Gabriele Tosi
Gabriele Tosi is an independent curator based in Italy. He runs the project space Localedue in Bologna experimenting various curatorial formats. Since 2010 he curates exhibitions for galleries and istitutions. Recent projects include: Mono (Localedue, Bologna, 2019); Don’t Make Them Tell You Where They Come From (Metronom, Modena, 2019); The Raw Morphology (A+b Gallery, Brescia, 2019); Chi utopia mangia le mele (Ex Dogana di Terra, Verona, 2019)

Lottozero textile laboratories
Lottozero is a center for textile design, art and culture based in Prato, one of the most important textile district of Europe. Lottozero operates both as a consultancy studio and as a creative hub. Its headquarters occupy a total of 400-sqm and are divided into a gallery/exhibition area, a shared studio space/coworking and an open laboratory for textile production, experimentation and research with a variety of textile techniques: knitting, silkscreen printing, felting, weaving, dying, sewing and embroidery.
The extensive knowledge of Lottozero is complemented by the expertise and production capacity of the historical textile district and by a widespread and reliable network of excellent creative collaborators.
